What is Supervision?

Supervision refers to a process where a more experienced, knowledgeable, and skilled professional, known as a supervisor/manager/leader/partner, provides guidance, support, and feedback to another professional or trainee, known as a supervisee.

The purpose of supervision is to improve the quality of work and ensure that the supervisee’s work is ethical, competent, and effective. In most cases, supervision includes regular meetings between the supervisor and supervisee to review cases, discuss ethical, operational, code of conduct, and professional issues, identify areas of improvement, and offer support and guidance.

What is an effective Supervision Framework?

A supervision framework for Support Workers supporting clients with disabilities, youth workers, and aged care workers involves several key elements:

1. Regular one-on-one meetings between the Support Worker and a supervisor/partner to discuss the support worker’s work with clients, including any challenges or successes.

2. A system for documenting client progress and the Support Worker’s interventions, which can be reviewed during supervision meetings.

3. A process for addressing ethical, operational, code of conduct, or legal concerns that may arise during the Support Worker’s work.

4. Opportunities for ongoing training and professional development for Support Workers, such as workshops, seminars, or mentoring.

5. Regular evaluations of the Support Worker’s performance, including feedback from clients and their families or relevant stakeholders.

6. Establishing clear boundaries and communication protocols between the Support Worker and the client.

7. Regular team meetings to discuss common issues and share best practices.

8. Establishing a protocol for reporting and managing incidents or complaints.
